While enough light can be obtained to shoot with 400 spd film during the day
and get reasonable shutter speeds, I would think that the bigger issue would
be the effect that a 5.6 aperture has on AF ability. More light reaching the
AF sensor equates to better AF performance and the difference between 5.6
and even 4.0 is significant.

probably, but its not just light reaching the AF (as a filter on the front and a dull day will do more than that) but IIRC the width of serpation provided by a wider lens

anyway I've used the EF 100-300 USM, and in real operation, will focus on a plain white T shirt, where my other Sigma will just rack from one of focus to the other. (I actually tried this, as the first thing I wanted to do with the lens to get it to go from one end to the other, to see how fast its usm was and it just locked focus)

its a quick focusing lens, try it, you'll like it

of course the 300 F2.8L if you've got the cash, I'm sure you won't be disappointed in it

This is the main reason I use 2.8 lenses for
motorsports, I rarely actually shoot at maximum aperture with vehicles but
do need maximum AF performance.

Of course the "old hands" would get around this quite successfully using
manual focussing techniques such as pre-focussing, and this is quite a valid
option for part-time sports shooters.

maybe, I grew up on MF cameras, and things like focusing on a point and waiting for the subject to enter it are certainly among them, but having done both, I can say I'd rather have the USM and AI Servo thanks I can follow the runner, and capture when they're looking HOW I wanted (Eg mid step)
