Well, this is just an observation (own Canon and Olympus), but if that is
your big need, pick up an Olympus E-1 and the 14-54mm lens. It is easily
midrange L quality(prefer it to 28-70L and 17-40L, but prefer 24-70L over
it) and covers the 28-108mm F2.8-3.5 range with the crop. It is tough as
nails. The camera is lighter than the 10D. The lens is light. And as long
as you normally are not doing all your shooting above ISO 800, relatively
noiseless (plus it focuses a might bit faster than the 10D). If you cover
the FOV of 28-400mm 35 equiv, you have a little over 3 lbs of very fast
lenses.

Ii does seem odd that Canon has not filled the need though.

Subject: EOS Arrgh! I want a lens that doesn't exist.

What I really want is
something to replace the 28-105 or 28-135 given the
cropping factor of the 10d.

Sigma makes an 18-50 that would be near perfect if it
were made by Canon to L standards. Even a Sigma EX
lens in this range might get my money. What I really
want is a 17-60, f2.8-4.0 L or EX quality lens. I'd
probably prefer one that didn't cover the full 35mm
frame to cut down on size and weight. Ideally, It
would cover the sensor of the 1D Mk II, but I'd
probably buy one even if it only covered the 10d size
sensor.

Are any lens manufacturers listening?
