After two weeks in Japan and Beijing shooting with my
?10d, I've come to the realization that the lens I
most need doesn't exist.

I shot mostly with my 17-35 L, and it worked well for
probably 50% of my shots. For the long end I used the
new 70-300 DO. (Initial impressions are positive, but
I need to take a closer look at the images before I
offer a final judgement).

The problem is the range in between. The 24-70 (or
28-70, which I own) is a great lens, but bulkier and
heavier than I really want to carry while traveling,
especially when it's in ADDITION to the other lenses.
I did miles and miles of walking, and a camera bag or
backback gets heavy pretty quickly. (OK, call me a
wimp if you regularly hike with a 70-200 IS L.)

The 17mm end of the wide zoom is wide enough for the
vast majority of the shots I took. The 16 would be
(slightly) better. But the 35mm end is just too short
for the mid-range, and leaves too much of a gap to the
70-300. I suppose I could get a 17-40, but that's
still pretty short, and I'd miss the extra stop. The
24-70 just isn't wide enough. What I really want is
something to replace the 28-105 or 28-135 given the
cropping factor of the 10d.

Sigma makes an 18-50 that would be near perfect if it
were made by Canon to L standards. Even a Sigma EX
lens in this range might get my money. What I really
want is a 17-60, f2.8-4.0 L or EX quality lens. I'd
probably prefer one that didn't cover the full 35mm
frame to cut down on size and weight. Ideally, It
would cover the sensor of the 1D Mk II, but I'd
probably buy one even if it only covered the 10d size
sensor.

Are any lens manufacturers listening?
