Hi Jim,

Optically a very fine lens IMO, but it has a noisy, slow autofocus motor and
lacks the ability to manually focus or touch up focus without switching off
AF on the lens barrel.  For many people this is all you will need much of
the time when using a 50mm lens.  For some (myself included), the lack of
FTM, slow focusing and noisy AF won't get the job done while shooting with a
50mm regularly.  Additionally, while the higher initial cost of the EF 50
1.4USM can be a factor the difference is almost nothing over the anticipated
10 year life I expect from a high-end lens like this.  Just my .02, YMMV.
