Jim Davis WROTE:

No, the 'pseudo-focus ring' is on the end of the 1.8 Mk.II lens, a
really poor position I think. And it's not so hot optically wide open
either...

I can say that now, cause I'm now a snobby EF 50/1.4 USM owner!

The 50/1.8 Mk.I was actually 15,000 yen and since it doesn't have USM
and FTM, and the like new 50/1.4 beside it was only 31,000 yen, and
I'd sworn only to buy USM lenses, I bit the bullet and got the better
lens.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
I too own the 50mm F1.4 but your statement of wide open performance with the
50mm F1.8 Mk II is not true.
If you check Photodo you will see:

Weighted MTF for 50 mm: F1.4=0.58; F2=0.73; F2.8=0.78; F4=0.84; F8=0.86
Weighted MTF for 50 mm: F1.8=0.67; F2.8=0.77; F4=0.81; F8=0.85

At F1.8 it is about where the 1.4 would be at that aperture as well. The
only reason I do not have this lens anymore is I got a 50mm F1.4 at a good
price, so I gave the 50mm F1.8 MkII to a friend who uses it quite a bit.

BTW, all fast lenses (and this includes Leica) are not very good in terms of
resolution wide open. Some are better than others but none are great. It has
to do with trade offs in the design.
