Hi Alex,

I have the 3 and recently purchased this lens to shoot the musical "It's a
Wonderful Life" It has that fast moving school dance scene where the gym
floor opens up. (note: this show didn't have a pool) This is the fifth year
that this show has run during the holidays. I have shot it the last three
years with the following lenses and results. The first year I used the 3
with the Canon 28-135 IS USM. The lens' IS feature performed great, however,
even using 800 film, I couldn't stop the action, so backgrounds looked great
and the people were smeared. This lens is too slow for this application,
with the film I was using (800) The second year, I used a Sigma 28-70 2.8.
It worked great with the same film, shot at 1/60-80th sec at 2.8 (the 3's
spot meter was indispensable) However, I really need that 135 focal length.
So this last performance. I used the Sigma 70-200/2.8 EX HSM. The results
were great. I could stop the action and get plenty close. I also used a
monopod to since it lacked IS, but after shooting several performances, the
monopod made holding the camera a lot easier, and I could make quick H/V
changes with the included tripod collar, which IIRC is not included with the
Canon.

An added note regarding the construction, I did try this lens from my local
camera shop. The only lens they had was the one on display and had been the
demo for a long time. It focused a little noisy, kind of surprised me in
that it was as noisy as the non HSM Sigma 28-70 2.8 I also readily felt the
torque of the focusing. Had I gotten too spoiled by Canons lenses? Who
wouldn't They are hard to beat, especially the Canon 70-200 2.8 HSM. So I
decided to get the Sigma from B&H. At least, assuming their rate of product
turn-over, it would have the latest software version that would work with
the 7, not that I have a 7 but I do want the New EOS TI (what a great travel
body). I was very pleased with this lens' operation, very quiet and smooth
focusing, no jerking from torque in the focusing. It just makes me wonder,
how long do I have before mine starts to operate like the demo model from my
LCS. Until then, I couldn't be happier with the overall performance.

Steve
