Square formats (for negatives) are not new (in fact exceedingly old). But few pictures work best square (Album covers, calendars?).
That's a matter of taste. I really like the square format, probably even more than any other ratio if done well (which is hard). Now, if we're talking about selling pictures (which I'm not), then that might be different.
