I've been using a Canon 1.4xTC with my 100-400L and haven't noticed any degradation. I hand held this combination when shooting an Air Show last year (560mm, f/8, panning with IS mode 2, Kodak Supra 400 film), check out the airplane shots at: http://www.norlink.net/~rchand/photo/marinapark.htm The only thing you have realize is that the lens becomes f/8 @ 560mm which is getting a little bit slow. I didn't buy the 2x TC because I didn't want to shoot with an 800mm (f/11) lens. Hope this elps.
