If you do get the 2x. If you can live with 560mm (400mm +1.4x) get the 1.4x. The quality is best with the 1.4x but very good with the 2x. TCs are basically magnifiers.The more you magnify the image produced by the lens, the more it degrades. Currently I have both the 1.4x and 2x but in the Tamron SP (beige) models. Both cost about the same as one Canon 1.4x. Just my 2 cents.
