Yes, I know that, but they're rather lens-specific, and with
a DSLR a body-specific one would make more sense to me.

one that could be inserted between the body and lens, like TCs.

I fail to see any technical reason one couldn't work between the
body and the lens. It would lengthen the lens, true, but so do
TCs. 

If there is a technical reason I've missed, I'd appreciate 
some explanation (or pointer to such).

Many pros are using teleconverters a lot, and in many situations you
just can't move back without hitting a wall or worse.

I'm planning to buy a 10D soon and I'd be happy to spend
an extra $200-300 on such an item (after all, I'm considering
getting either 16-35/2.8L or 17-40/4L, which cost a lot more).
