Custom Function 14 is for automatic reduction of fill flash. If you leave this enabled the camera controls the amount of fill flash based on your exposure settings. Personally, I do not like this feature for other than casual photography. I almost always disable this CF and adjust the flash output -1.5 or -1.67 (depending on if you have your functions to adjust in half or third stops) by depressing the exposure compensation button on the top left of the camera and turning the Quick Control Dial on the rear of the camera. If the shadows are a bit harsher I may set it to -1 which will help. What I try to do is keep the subjects face in the shade and then use -1.67 just to add a catch light to the eyes. Hope this helps.
