I think it's the same reason as "No partial metering linked to AF
point". At least, not that I'm aware of. If I'm wrong about this, I'd
like very much to stand corrected. On my 30 I could choose whether I
wanted the metering linked to the AF point, but haven't been able to
find that on the 10D.

Speaking of flash and metering, does any one know a good way to keep
shutterspeed down when shooting in AV-mode, in low lit situations?
I've not been into flash much till now, but I like to shoot in AV-mode
most of the time, *especially* when shooting people (receptions,
parties). However, the camera assumes looong shutterspeeds when I try
this. Am I
doing something wrong?
