Using  "P" mode have you tried dragging the shutter to say 1/45 or 1/30 .
This should allow for some of the background to build up exposure.

I have tried using av with flash but without much success inside. I find
that using either shuttter priority or "P" mode and dragging shutter works
best.

I use an elan II with 5503ex.
