Has anyone had success firing a 550ex on manual with an optical slave

I have a Wein Peanut , it fires the flash once then must be disconnected
and reconnected in order to flash again. I did some searching on the
web and found the problem is fairly common.

Canon Speedlites aren't designed to be triggered by optical slaves and most people find that they generally lock up after each flash as you've described. One way around this is to use the Ikelite Lite-Link, which reportedly works well and supports Canon TTL to boot.

Having said that, I think it makes most sense to use the 550EX with wireless E-TTL assuming you have a type A camera body. I'd only use optical slaves for non-dedicated flash units, personally.
