Has anyone had success firing a 550ex on manual with an optical slave trigger? *********************************************************** I have not tried to fire my 550EX with optical communication, but I do regularly fire the 550EX with a PockeWizard wireless solution. Obviously, the 550EX has to be set to manual mode, so there's no ETTL, etc. But you still have adjustable power settings available to you in manual mode. While I do instead use the ST-E2 IR communication solution, it does not always work in some situation outside in bright light where there's large distance between the ST-E2 and the 550EX. To trigger the 550EX with a PocketWizard, you'll need an adapter cable to convert from the 550EX's hot shoe mount to the PW's phono plug input. And of course a pair of PWs.
