Hi Jim,

I've seen a couple of 50/Elan IIs with early signs of the problem, but generally
they're new enough for it to have not happened yet...

In Australia they still cost around AU$180 (US$120) to repair - that's almost the cost
of buying one of these early models used anyway... But I'm trying to find out if the
different shutter design of several models (620, 5/A2e/A2 or 1/1n) is less affected.

I know that it's a common problem with the 650, 630, 100/Elan, 10, 1000/Rebel models -
but they all have the simpler shutter design (I think). The others I mentioned have
(I believe) a double bladed shutter design to enable higher x-synch speeds and I've
been told it's not a common problem with them. My own experience seems to bear this
out.

Even if a particular body I look at doesn't have the problem NOW, it's likely to
happen at some future time (sometimes only months later - at least I've had that
happen a couple of times). If the 620, 5/A2e or 1 is not affected by this, that's
one problem I can reasonably expect NOT to happen in the next few years....

Yes, I (reluctantly) sold my own black EOS 55 as I rarely used it anymore since going
digital.
