Can't answer for the big wides, but I frequently use a screw-on hood designed
for a "std." 50mm lens on my EF 35 f2 - when using it on my 10D.  Can't say
whether I've noticed any improvement, but reduction of non-image forming light
has to be a "good thing".

You could try one of the rubber screw-on types; and gradually cutting parts away
until it didn't vignette.  Trouble is they then get floppy, and need some wire
to hold them in shape.
