Our petrol tax is very high and is going up, and both photo and electrical items cost us much the same in GBP as they would cost in the USA in $$. (1 GBP = about 1.6$ at the moment.) So a 1Ds is listed at about 5500 GBP including VAT in this weeks "Amateur Photographer". (Don't know whether there's a discount for pro users.) My problem is that I simply don't see cameras such as the 10D, D60, 1D, 1Ds in the local shops when they're current, or at all! (Only saw a D60 after the 10D came on the scene.) Similarly, the only L lenses I've seen are those that I own, or have seen in shops in London, where I've had to go to buy my gear when I wanted a "hand-on" before purchase. P&S cameras are everywhere, as are film cameras (but not EOS 3s, 1Vs and similar) but the only DSLRs that I see seem to be Nikon gear used by the local newspaper.
