Ok, it will depend on budget of course. I use my 20-35 USM for a walk about lens. I have thought about getting something like a 28-70L but I already have a 50/1.4 and 85/1.8 and these two with my 20-35 really do fill the gaps. The one lens I am considering getting though is an alternative when only one lens is desired. And that is the 28-135 IS. You might consider this lens too. IS is wonderful and this lens is quite sharp, not too big, not too expensive and has a good range. The 17-40L is certainly a nice lens and fills a gap for your current lineup. A bit pricier though. Ain't budget a bitch. Avoid the 3rd party lenses is my opinion.
