Hi

I've been using a 420ex with my Elan 7e (EOS 30) and the results have
been very good. The 420ex has a max width of 24, I've used a StoFen
diffuser with a 16mm lens without any corner fading.

I've just purchased a 550ex to use as a master in a multy flash setup and
the 550ex is slightly larger in all dimensions than the 420ex. According
to my manuals the 420ex weighs 320g and the 550ex weighs 405g.

The 550ex has an interesting feature. The built-in diffuser can also be
used to deflect a small amout of light directly towards the subject when
using the flash in bounce mode. The idea is to create a small catch light
in the subject's eyes. It actually works fairly well. To use the diffuser
in this manner, you extend the diffuser panel from it's housing in the
550ex, but don't flip it down.

Hope this helps.

Rob
