The 550EX is heavier and taller.

The amount of light provided by an EX speedlight is controlled by the
camera body.  Flash exposure compensation control is available on your
EOS 50 or on the 550EX.

The LCD doesn't use much power (neither does the LCD on your wristwatch!)
and cannot be turned off.  The 550EX provides more light and accordingly
uses more power.

300gr for the 420EX and 405gr for the 550EX.
