1) If you shoot a lot of macro photography, perhaps an MR-14Ex or an MT-24EX
would be better.

2) If you shoot 2nd curtain sync, the 420EX is easier to use than the 550EX.
The Sigma EF 500 Super drops out of 2nd curtain as soon as the shutter speed
drops below X-Sync, and the setting has to be reapplied.

3) If you ever need a wireless slave flash, choose the Sigma EF 500 Super.
The 550EX (and 420EX) need an additional optical slave trigger hotshoe
accessory.

4) If you intend to build a wireless E-TTL system, you should choose one
550EX as the master unit. It has functions that are not currently available
on any other flash.

the detailed differences between the various E-TTL flash units. Note that
