Julian,

Neither, I always have at least one if not two back-up fresh-in-the-pack
2CR5 batteries with me (a prudent practice in any case), the ST-E2 always
has a "previously utilized" 2CR5 in it, and if for some reason the 2CR5 in
the ST-E2 is weak or dead, I just swap the EOS-3 battery into the ST-E2, and
pop in a brand new battery into the EOS-3.

It helps I also have an advanced point-and-shoot Canon film camera from a
long time ago that also uses 2CR5, so my camera battery requirement revolves
around 2CR5 and AA (for the flash).

I have to admit if would be nice if all my gear run off AAs, as I can just
see the MiNH rechargeable battery technology keeps on improving, 5 or 6
years ago they maxed out at 1,200 mAH, now they are at 2,100 mAH and
available from local hardware store, there's likely more growth yet !
