Hi Peter,

Good question. The answers are not immediately apparent, hence the
document at EOSDOC: http://eosdoc.com/manuals.asp?q=ETTLDx

The Sigma EF 500 Super can be set to non-ETTL slave mode. This means
that it will trigger on a single, uncoded optical pulse, just like having
a simple HAMA hotshoe optical slave trigger mounted on the hotshoe, or a
Wein peanut in the PC socket of a studio strobe.

It does require another flash to trigger it, but the signal is not coded
with channel or group information. You can trigger it by pushing the Test
Button on another flash, or by using the (TTL) popup flash on your EOS
camera. If you have an E-TTL flash for master, you will need to do an
additional step to prevent the E-TTL preflash from setting off

The slave is sensitive to Infrared light, so applying an IR filter made
from processed unfogged slide film gives another option for lighting
control.

Cheers
Julian Loke
