I understand that. What i dont get is why and how is the unit
consuming energy by doing nothing. After the tube is charged, does it
need more power to conserve this charge ?
It's not like let's say a capacitor where when it's charged it's
charged?
I guess the noise that comes from the flash when left idle has
something to do as well.

In SE mode the flash goes to sleep after the set time as 
does your camera. It does not continue to charge the flash. 
There is a small amount of currrent being used for what 
I would call "stand by" mode, but this is not enough to 
drain the batteries unless you leave it on a few days.
