I just bought a 550ex flash, and while shooting I left my 50e aside
switched on with the 550ex switched on as well (NOT in the SE
position). After I think a couple of hours, the batteries of the flash
were completely flat. I couldn't even get the flash LCD.
Is that because it wasn't left in the SE position ? If that is the
case why would one not use the SE ?
Why were the batteries exhausted so quickly? Is the flash consuming
power when not in use ? Is that why it's making a noise as well ?

Yes. The SE is a "Saves Energy" setting. I use this when I want the
flash to go to sleep after about 5-7 minutes of non-use. When you pick
up the camera and touch the shutter release the Flash comes back on and
charges up again for use. Great feature.
Times you would not use SE is when you are at an event and can't afford
to miss a shot since it may take a couple of seconds for the flash to
charge back up after going to sleep.
