system. First of all, any ETTL user MUST understand it's basic
requirement - it's tied to active ASF point for most of its flash
exposure calculation, so each time prior to releasing the shutter, make
sure your current active AF point is right on the subject, preferable
on top of its most improtant part you want to be sure to be exposed
properly (say, people face, forehead).

Alex is correct, but putting the AF point right on critical exposure
subjects at exposure time is not always feasible for the desired
composition. That's when FEL (flash exposure lock) is needed to pre-flash
the critical exposure piece (e.g. face) with the center AF point/Partial
metering circle, for flash-metering, lock it in memory, then re-compose the
shot, then release the shutter.

... none of which can yet automatically account for non-middle gray tones
(e.g. caucasian skin). So even with E-TTL and FEL, one still has to apply
FEC (flash exposure compensation) as needed

Cheers,

David
