Is that the reason that when the camera is set to Full Auto, if you
focus on something dark but really far away the flash will still come
up ? I find it a bit silly for a camera with otherwise sophisticated
algorithms to believe it can use its tiny popup flash to light
something that is 50 metres away.

And a contradicting question: Can you use an external flash like the
550, have it switched on, but let the camera decide when to use it ?
Or once its connected and switched on it will fire nonetheless ?
