To be more specific, the gold stripe (acutally a silkscreen) indicates that the lens 
has full-time manual focus. The silver stripe is used on the really cheap zoom lenses 
(such as the 28-80 and 28-90). The 24-85 was also made in silver to match the EOS IX 
APS SLR.
