I think the silver ring is now reserved for USM lenses without FTM, I have examples here of the 28-90mm, 55-200mm and 75-300mm, all the USM versions and all with silver rings. But the older USM lenses had a dotted gold band whether FTM or not, like the 75-300mm I and II, 35-135mm, 75-300IS, etc.
And my 50mm f/1.8 has a gold ring on it, although it hasn't completely dried yet :<) Tom P. > -----Original Message----- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of > John Chennavasin > Sent: Friday, January 30, 2004 12:11 PM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: Re: EOS Canon News > > > On Friday, January 30, 2004, at 09:20AM, Peter Norby > <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > >IIRC, the Gold signifies USM (for non-L lenses, of course). > >I hadn't noticed it before really, until somebody got a 50/1.4 that > >also had a gold ring on it (the 50/1.8 does not, naturally). > > To be more specific, the gold stripe (acutally a silkscreen) > indicates that the lens has full-time manual focus.
