FYI, Tripod detection is a completely separate issue from the 2 IS modes.  It was not 
implemented in older IS lenses (like my 100-400 :<).  IS Mode I corrects both vertical 
and horizontal motion.  IS Mode II only corrects motion in one direction, so that you 
can use IS while panning.  Neither inherently do tripod detection.
