I haven't yet found a lens that works really well with the 2x.

Hi Henning,

The 200 f2.8L prime with 2x is a pretty sharp combo, but then I guess it
depends on what your standards/requirements are. I've just bought a
2x Mk II, so I'm hoping for a slight improvement on already good results.

BTW AF speed is still good with the 2x....

Cheers
Gary

I don't have that lens, but it does make sense.

I would think that the extender with a prime lens would be better; one of the best combinations I've ever used was a Nikkor 180/2.8 ED with a Vivitar 2x macro converter (better than with Nikon's converters). Up to a point the intrinsic optical quality of the main lens and the converter counts; beyond that it seems to be a matter of how the two mate. It can be synergistic or garbage.

The original Flourite 300/2.8 FL lens with its dedicated converter was outstanding, and probably as good as the best available now, and back in the 70's Vivitar had an inexpensive little 70-150 zoom with dedicated converter that worked very well (for a zoom, at that time).
