Hi Peter

I'm using my 28-135 with film and the only way I've found get around the
softness issue is to shoot at F8 or higher. The softness is noticable even
on small 4x6 prints. I contacted Canon last summer about this problem and
they exchanged the lens under warranty, the replacement is better than my
original lens (the old lens was really bad).

Last fall I tried a simple (but not quite fair) test between the 28-135 and
my other lenses (16-35 & 100-400).

With the camera mounted on a tripod and using identical exposure settings I
took comparision pictures with these combinations:
a) 16-35 & 28-135 at 35mm
b) 28-135 & 100-400 at 100mm

Even on 4x6 prints, the differences were amazing! The pictures taken with
the 28-135 were noticably softer - even the folks in the photo lab were
surprised.

I contacted Canon again about the softness and this time I was told
something along the lines of ".. what do you expect for a consumer
lens...".

I know 2 other photographers that have 28-135's. One has an older 28-135
and his works great, the other person bought their 28-135 about a year ago
and it's soft.

Rob
