Hi Peter,

My experience with the several EF 28-135IS lenses I've tried and tested with
were all on slow tranny film. Some of them were definitely better than
others but none of the 28-135IS lenses I used made me happy at the long end.
This was the end of the zoom I wanted most to use with IS. My image quality
standard may have been a bit jaded though as I used my EF 135 2L as the
quality standard. In this comparison few lenses are very good but I had
hoped that the 28-135IS would do better.

I haven't had a chance to see if all the noise about the EF 28-135IS lens on
a digital body being a bad combination is true yet. Many people have said
this and many are people with opinions I generally think are good. All
three of my friends who shoot EOS bodies and had an EF 28-135IS have sold
them and moved on to better glass (2x EF 28-70 2.8L and 1x EF 24-70 2.8L).

IMO the only way to really check a lens out is to use it and I don't really
want to buy a new one just to test with it. But that being said I have
noticed that some lenses are not as good on a digital body as on a film
body. But the weird thing is that I've also noticed the opposite can be
true. Lenses that I would not reach for first are getting more use with my
digital shooting because for some reason they look better now. Take the EF
300 4L IS for example, a good lens and with IS a very good tool but on a
film body, not in the same league as my trusty EF 300 2.8L or an EF 300 4L.
The EF 300 4L IS on a digital body is really a remarkable lens that for some
reason is better than when used on a film body. I can almost see letting my
EF 300 2.8L go but for the fact that the EF 300 4L IS's AF is (IMO), too
slow at f/8 even on an EOS 1D using the center AF point and the EF 300 2.8L
even at f/5.6 still has excellent high performance AF. Compromise is
everywhere I guess.

Cheers/Chip
