I bought my Sigma 17-35 EX HSM second-hand four years ago, so it could be one of the first production batch. It's been in for service more than any other lens. On purchase, slight roughness to focus ring noted - not enough to worry about. 1 From about 1 year later, on my EOS10 & EOS3 - it didn't like getting cold (photos taken in cold, high altitude areas were over-exposed, as were shots taken in the cold in the UK; others taken when camera was warmer were OK). It had a new aperture motor fitted by Sigma UK. Worked OK after this repair, as far as I could tell. 2 March 2003. Got my 10D, and it obviously wasn't behaving correctly on the 2nd. and subsequent shots in a sequence. Rechipped by Sigma UK, now worked OK but showed the well publicised blur on the RHS. (Example on my website) 3 Sept. 2003. I dropped it 1.2m onto concrete. Only 2 minute scratches on the lens mount, but it now rattled and didn't focus. Repaired again by Sigma UK, and it's now smoother than ever before. But poor sharpness noted when tested on 10D, and I nearly sold it. (Bought an EF 20 f2.8 to cover the wide angle end.) 4 March 2004. Had 10D's AF calibrated, and my Sigma 17-35 can now produce sharp A4s. Have looked for RHS blur and can't see it now. Strange...
