On Jim's advice, I also bought the Carbon One monopod (449) and have been
very happy with it. I'm also an amateur but for me it was certainly worth
the extra money. It's small and light enough to pack into a backpack, but
in the mountains I use it as a walking stick :). I got the 234RC head for
it and it easily takes my EOS 30 with 2x extender and 70-200L IS.

The 200PL quick release plate is used on a large range of Manfrotto's
heads. There's a safety lock mechanism to prevent accidental release.

I've been a Velbon user until now, but the quality of the Manfrotto
monopod convinced me to save money for the carbon one 4-section tripod as
well (440). I've already bought the 460MG Magnesium head which uses the
same quick release plate as the 234RC.

My reasons for choosing the Carbon One series are obvious: light weight
(back pack) and high quality.

Hope this helps, Stefan
