Robert,

I remember hiring Tamron 300 f/2.8's, in the dim and distant past, when a
Canon was unavailable to me.

Used with Canon A1 or T90. IIRC, they were well made and a little lighter
than the Canon, though I'd be reluctant to bounce one between cameras. ;-)

The first sample was distinctly soft in the corners wide open with some CA.
At f/4 there was a marked improvement but I never hired it again as I
figured I would be better off with a Canon f/4. The second sample was way
better and I used it several times. Obviously I couldn't do a direct
comparison with a Canon but I think the Canon had better contrast and
saturation but there wasn't a huge difference. Both had excellent resolution
even wide open.

The Tamron came with a tele-converter (1.4x?) but the combo performed poorly
compared to a Canon with a Canon TC, vignetting and taking a big hit
optically. Also, to use it you had to remove the adaptall mount from the
lens, put it on the TC and then mount the lens. A proper PITA.

I think there have been several variations of this lens and I don't have a
clue as to which models I've used.

I would imagine that you lose auto diaphragm with this lens and an EF
adaptall mount so it could be a little frustrating, depending on how you
intend using it.

For my needs I'd sooner have a EF300 f/4 (about the same price in similar
condition?) but them I don't have an E-1.

HTH
