==> The quality of images from the 10d are really
outstanding, and it looks like the 20d may be even
better. I really don't think image quality is an
issue. Use with wide angles, however, is a good
reason to want a larger sensor. But adding that would
increase size and cost, wo for me the tradeoff is
probably worth while. At least until the price of
larger sensors comes down.

==> The only reason I can see this is if you already
own a 1D and want compatibility. Otherwise, the 20d
already gives about 500 shots, 1000 with the grip, in
a much more compact and light weight package.

Based on Galbraith's comments, it sounds like AF is
going to be good enough for most sports shooting, at
least with f 2.8 lenses.

In all my 35 or so years as a serious photographer,
I've never bought an alternate screen. I suspect
that's true of most buyers. Even buyers of 1 series
cameras. And it probably would add quite a bit to the
cost.

I'm sure they can. But can they sell enough of them to
compensate for the design and tooling costs?

==> The different grip is the price of progress: A
smaller lighter body. Batteries are the same. And your
comment about the D60 explains why a 1D battery isn't
needed.
