Are you also considering buying a used DSLR? Seems to me like there will be quite a few available in the coming months. I have both a digital P&S (non-Canon) and DSLR, and while there are some advantages to the P&S (mostly weight and size), the photos I take with it don't come anywhere close to the quality I get with the DSLR.
