It is a "focus limiter" for lack of a better description.
If it is in the 3M-Infinity you can't focus closer that 3M.
In the 1.5M-Infinity you have full range of focus.
If you're shooting beyond 3M focus is quicker since the lens will not try to focus closer than 3M.....
