I assumed that Al had it this way just for the photo.  If he actually 
uses it this way, he is getting far less that the maximum softness than 
the umbrella set up will produce.

You need to move the flash far enough away from the umbrella so that the 
ENTIRE umbrella is illuminated by the flash.

Thanks Al, that's exactly what I was looking for - must have missed it the
