Ok, the former has IS, but the latter is L and can also be used on 24x36,

And the former has a 5x zoom while the latter has a 2.35x zoom.  So a second
lens is required to cover the same range.

The 17-85 and the 75-300 will cover the range that most people desire.  With
the 17-40 at least 3 lenses would be required to cover the same range.  This
should represent a cost savings to the customer.
