I should probably stay out of these sorts of discussions but ...

First of all, Photodo has the sharpness test results, check them out!

I had a 50/1.4, lovely lens. I sold it recently, just didn't use it
enough.

If you use your 28-105 at 50mm and stop down 2 stops you will not know
the difference from the sharpest 50mm lens. Handheld, I doubt you
could tell them apart at any aperture.

Ask yourself how often have you shot your 28-105 at 50mm? Never is
your likely answer. Be honest.

So, other than just having a 'whoppee this sucker is razor sharp' lens
in the bag, what makes you think you NEED a 50mm lens?

If you think you need one for portraits, think again. You'd just be
highlighting skin imperfections.

If you think you need the extreme DOF think again. You'd just end up
with sharpness on the tip of the nose only.

If you think you'd like to shoot some macro sometimes, get a longer
macro lens like the 100 Macro.

Reasons I sold my 50/1.4 other than that I didn't use it much:

- sloppy AF ring sucked
- not actually any sharper since I hate tripods
- made my bag heavier for no reason
- needed more room in bag to carry it so it got left home a lot
- I love to zoom. To frame exactly just right, from here, NOW.
- I HATE CHANGING LENSES especially in the field
- changing lenses puts dust and dirt on the digital sensor, causes
lenses to be dropped, etc etc etc
- I wanted to compact my entire line of lenses and really get to know
the ones I do use. The 50/1.4 is a lovely piece of art for the shelf,
but I hate to see something functional sit and collect dust and mold.
- and finally, NO IS - I love IS. I love my 28-135 IS very much. The
only other lens I have is the 100-400L IS. These two lenses are all I
need.

YMMV
