We can surely disagree, but you can't pull the wool over my eyes about
fast lenses people. I've been shooting almost 40 years now and have had
plenty of fast glass in that time. And besides, this is all just my
opinion, you can have your opinion too, just don't tell me I'm wrong,
just as I'm not saying anyone else is wrong. Just that I don't agree.

Let's just be honest, in MOST cases fast lenses are not needed, and are
basically status symbols of shooters who produce MOSTLY whimsical self
gratifying art, if they even shoot at all.

Enough said?

Jim,

I can partially agree in saying I have no need for super fast glass,
like the F1 and F1.2L, but the F1.4 does allow a sharper photo at F2 and
F2.8 than a lens with a max aperture of F2.8 shot wide open.
No disrepect, but you are probably a nature photographer who shoots
everything at F11 or so, in which case you cannot see the need for
faster apertures.
I too have been shooting for more than 40 years, but I do portraits and
an F2 or F2.8 lens is amazing when you shoot it at F4 or F5.6, simply
because of the way lenses are designed.
We can discuss this all day, but I think we are pretty much in sync.
Bear in mind if you are doing wedding photography a nice F1.4 lens can
get a great shot with flash and pick up ambient light in a church where
you are really hard pressed to do this with a F5.6 lens unless you have
a tripod and want to try very slow shutter speeds. You will get blurry
people if you do.
