.02: I think that is very agreeable to. Think of it,
if Canon has a 5-7MP 17-24mm range Sub $500 compact
with built in IS and so on, who would buy any of their
17-40Ls or 16-35s ? Think about it, these compacts are
NOT meant for the pros or serious photographers who
already know how to use serious gear (although Digi
Compacts may be used by them). They are intended for
either a) those who are upgrading their past 3-5MP
Digi P&S (and thus looking for more features such as
IS) or b) those who are new to this world and are
overawed by the superiority of one Digi Compact over
another.

If you really want a wide end with digital, go get a
16-35 or a 17-40 or a 24 or something like that and
buy a 1Ds or something like that - not very compact
but it will give you all you (and Canon) need :-)
