Diopters on a zoom are awesome. John Shaw states in his "Closeups in
Nature" book,

"My first choice for closeup work with a zoom is adding a two element
diopter to the zoom. With this combination, you can zoom and stay in focus
simultaneously, and the two-element diopter yields very good results."

"With a diopter on a zoom, you benefit from the effect of using a focusing
rail withouth actually having to use one"

I have found this to be an extremely useful combination for hand-held
butterfly shots. The butterflys seldom sit still enough for a tripod shot,
so with an 80-200, a 500D, and a 550EX with Lumiquest bounce, I have a hand
holdable combo that I can point and use the zoom feature to fill the frame,
then shoot.
