The Canon 500D, two-element, diopter is a particularly sensible
option. The main advantage of extension tubes is the lack of distortion
due to the absence of additional lenses, but a good diopter is faster and
will not introduce noticeable distortion.
Have a look at
http://photonotes.org/articles/beginner-faq/lenses.html. You may also wish
to consider http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/eosfaq/closeup2.htm and
http://www.nikonlinks.com/unklbil/macro_adapter.htm#diopters. I can look
for more references I know to have got at home, should you like it.

occasional close up shots. I am not ready to buy a proper macro lens and
intend to use either Canon 500D close up filter or EF25 II extension tube
on my 70-200/2.8 (non-IS). All I need is a quick summary of pros and cons
or a pointer to a link with such information.
