Of course, the best answer depends on what your subjects are and how much magnification you really need. >From a practical standpoint, though, I really prefer using Extension tubes for walk-around, mostly handheld work with subjects such as butterflies and flowers. I have used both tubes and the 500D in real-world use with a 100-400 lens, and found the close working distance required by the 500D to be very impractical. The trade-off will be that you won't be able to get quite as high a magnification with the Extension tube as you will with the diopter. You can, of course, add additional 12 or 25 mm extension tubes if you need to get closer than the single 25mm allows. I rarely use more than 37mm of extension, and this will get you much further on the 70-200 than it does on my 100-400. If you use a 1.4x or 2x convertor with the 70-200, you can put the extension tube in front of the convertor to get more extension.
