Hi Rich,

I tend to carry on a LowePro Stealth AW backpack, and even though I've
had it loaded to the hilt, I've never had a problem.

I recently got a Pelican 1510 Carry On, although I have not yet flown with it

I suspect that it might be considered too bulky by some carriers. I'm
happy to check it with some gear inside, but not my 1DII and best lenses.
If I was going to check the Pelican, I would use these to secure it:

Personally I think how a person carries a bag gives many clues as to the
contents. Some carriers have strict carry-on weight restrictions, British
Airways being one. When I travel with the LowePro, when checking in, I
don't act as if it is heavy - I have it casually hung over one shoulder,
even during check in. If it doesn't look heavy, it need not *be* heavy :-)
