You can also take a larger backpack than allowed, but only take a
smaller one (with the most precious equipment) as carry-on
luggage....simply put the larger backpack in the suit-case (with some
of the more bulky & less-precious gear), and load it back up at your
destination.
That way you can still have a full-scale backpack (I believe the
Nature Trekker is smaller *inside* than a PhotoTrekker, but heavier
and probably larger on the outside).
Pro-Trekker is about similar inside, also more sturdy.

Oh, and don't forget to slide an extra piece of 1cm thick
(matrass)foam on the bottom, between inner and outer bag, folding
around the bottom/front corner, sticking out for 20-30cm....not only
for more shock-absorption when putting the back on the ground,
upright, but also creating a nice ergonomic 'table' to put some gear
on, when the bag is laid flat & open on the ground
(at least Super- and Pro-Trekker already have such a divider inside I
believe (with extra pockets on it; not sure about Nature-Trekker;
Photo- and Mini- don't have it))
This also protects your gear from hard objects in the outer pocket.
Highly recommended when skiing, when the blows from below and from
the back can be quite extreme, if you fall backwards.
(or ice skating, most extreme scenario (I even consider backpacks
'headprotection' that case!))
